William In Disaster Relief Drill

Prince William has been part of a hurricane disaster rescue exercise in the Caribbean during his attachment with the Royal Navy. The rehearsal's aim was to test the Navy's preparedness should a category five storm hit the volcanic island of Montserrat. William was involved in the planning and was a member of the forward command team, the first wave of Royal Navy personnel on to the island. Such a giant storm would threaten the lives of hundreds of people, while almost all buildings on the island would be destroyed. The main role of HMS Iron Duke in the region is disaster relief. However, last month it was revealed that the Royal Navy crew were involved in a £50m drug bust in the North Atlantic, netting more than one ton of cocaine. The disaster relief exercise saw personnel from the HMS Iron Duke land on Montserrat and assist local emergency services directing drills. The prince's role involved helping senior officers and local leaders direct the involvement of the 170 Navy personnel from the island's emergency rescue centre. William also joined a team, including medical specialists, at the scene of a coach crash exercise. Iron Duke's captain, Commander Mark Newland, said Sub-Lieutenant William Wales, as he is known on board, was a natural leader and commanding small teams of people came as "second nature" to the 26-year-old royal. "Sub-Lieutenant Wales, as part of his remit on board, has been involved in the planning from the outset, and that's primarily in developing a plan and understanding of the nature of the infrastructure on Montserrat," Commander Newland said. William, who is an officer in the Household Cavalry regiment, is halfway through a five-week stint on board HMS Iron Duke as part of a Royal Navy placement. He undertook a similar attachment with the RAF earlier this year. Source : Sky News.com
