Barack Obama released his energy plan, and John McCain criticized it. Republicans made fun of Obama for suggesting inflating your tires is a good way to save on gas. Obama's critics also accused him of flip-flopping on offshore drilling and opening up the strategic oil reserve. Democratic congressional candidate Eric Massa (29th CD) released his first TV ad, which calls him a "strong, independent voice" but makes no mention of his party affiliation. Mayor Bloomberg is heading to Las Vegas later this month for a National Clean Energy Summit organized by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. The state pension fund is fully funded and realized a positive return of 2.56 percent in 2007-08 despite the economic downturn, Comptroller Tom DiNapoli announced. Bill Clinton says he's not a racist. Clinton praised Obama, but couldn't bring himself to say Obama's ready to be president. It's unclear what role Bill Clinton will play at the convention. Boston Democrats are throwing Obama a birthday fundraiser. A Brooklyn resident notes Obama shares his birthday with one of his New York delegates, Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries (he's 38 today). Gwyneth Paltrow, who's backing Obama, appears in a new public service announcement encouraging Americans abroad to cast their ballots. Michelle Obama will meet with military spouses in Virginia. The Port Authority will block flights that result from the federal government's plan to auction off departure and arrival slots at New York's airports. Hillary Clinton introduced a Senate version of the Saving Energy Through Public Transportation Act. Rep. Jerry Nadler said Sen. Chuck Schumer is putting "considerations of personal friendship over everything else" in the Squadron/Connor race. The son of the Republican challenging Democratic Sen. Craig Johnson was arrested for DWI and possession of marijuana. Columnist Robert Novak has retired, and the prognosis for his brain tumor is "dire." Sen.
