A month ago -- just ahead of the financial crisis -- it was calculated that the Internet, hedge funds and oil, among other sources of income, had resulted in more than 1,000 world-wide billionaires. A lot of books concern themselves with how such well-to-do people spend their money, often telling lurid tales of indulgence and excess. "Philanthrocapitalism" concerns itself with the spending of the rich, too, but its focus is on charity. Who gives what to whom, yes, but also: In what way? To what purpose?
