What are haemorrhoids?

What are haemorrhoids?

Haemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels around your anus and inside your back passage (rectum). They're sometimes called piles. We don't know exactly what causes haemorrhoids. Experts think they occur when the small blood vessels (veins) in the lining of your back passage become wider and swollen with blood.[1]
