Jackie Greene will be among the featured performers this weekend at the American River Music Festival in Lotus, El Dorado County. ALL WEEKEND Music American River Music Festival What: Now in its third year, the American River Music Festival has become the largest music event in El Dorado County. Billed as a celebration of music and moving water, lovers of nature and music are in for a whale of a party. Camp in one of three riverfront campgrounds, embark on a whitewater river trip or hiking expedition, and participate in various workshops throughout the weekend. Oh, and there's music, too. An exciting lineup of Americana, folk and blues performers includes names like Jackie Greene, Nina Gerber and Jimmy LaFave. Carter, who will be presenting free-form kinetic paper sculptures from the five books in his newly completed "The Red Dot Series." Visitors can see and touch Carter's mind-tickling displays of color, form, movement and sound, and the exhibit's opening day includes both hands-on activities for the kids and a public reception, where the artist will be available to sign books. They toured with the likes of Duke Ellington and Charlie Parker. The quartet, known for its boundary-pushing style, introduced jazz to thousands of young people, thanks to various college campus tours. The Dave Brubeck Quartet is still hot, and you can witness the group's perpetual genius tonight. This third annual free community festival takes place in Curtis Park itself, where more than 60 Northern California artists will present and sell their masterpieces. Two all-acoustic live music stages will offer entertainment from popular local bands like the Poplollys, Ross Hammond & Brady McKay and the Alternative String Band. Curtis Drive, Sacramento Cost: Free admission Information: www.sierra2.org SATURDAY Environmental event Great American River Clean Up What: Held in conjunction with Coastal Cleanup Day, the annual California event that aims to preserve the beauty and health of the state's rivers, lakes, oceans and wildlife. Last year, 1,340 volunteers removed more than 20,000 pounds of debris from the American River Parkway. Remember why you fell in love with Sacramento by helping preserve its natural resources. Interested volunteers can participate in debris removal at one of 18 cleanup sites. This senior cat adopt-a-thon aims to find loving homes for an abundance of cats 10 years and older that have been left behind by owners who can no longer afford to feed and care for them. Happy Tails Pet Sanctuary will offer free cat food with adoptions, plus waived adoption fees for senior citizens searching for a like-minded (wise and seasoned) pet. You'll find everything from furniture and fur to farming equipment, and you can have your own antiques appraised as well. If the panoply of vintage gems gets overwhelming, take a breather and enjoy some live entertainment and a spirit-restoring Belgian waffle.
