Box.net started in 2005 in co-founders’ Aaron Levie’s and Dylan Smith’s dorm rooms as a way to let students access their files and share them, regardless of where they were. (Levie and Smith had grown up together but went to colleges on opposite coasts, in California and North Carolina). Six years later, with 240 employees and over $75 million in venture funding (and more coming), Box.net has enough customers to hold a conference in San Francisco Wednesday called BoxWorks featuring, among others, Netscape co-founder Marc Andreessen and the 1990s-era band Third Eye Blind.
