Gordon est né en 1940 à Glasgow. De 1961 à 1964, il étudie à la Central School of Art à Londres, d'où il sortira avec les honneurs. Puis en 1964, il intègre l'école Brooklyn Museum Art School, à New-York. Il croise alors tous les grans artistes de l'époque, d'Andy Warhol à Jason Pollock. En 1986, il s'installe à Lyon.
