How to Select a Photographer

How to Select a Photographer

Photography has a long history yet photographers continue to be in demand for capturing special occasions and events. With a good photographer, an event and, most importantly those special people in your life, can be forever remembered and treasured. Don’t just jump at the first photographer you see. Get multiple quotes as this will help define your requirements and give you a sense of what is a reasonable expectation in a given price range. Once you have a few quotes how can you ensure you are getting the best professional photographer? Here are some things to keep in mind when making your choice.

First and foremost reflect on your budget for a photographer. While photographers may quote similar prices, look at the package that they are offering. Things that impact price include: the number of poses (as the higher priced packages will typically include more poses), print copies, the time the photographer will be onsite, travel costs, the size of pictures, and whether touch ups or special effects are included. Decide what you can and cannot live without.

If you are dealing with a company, find out which photographer(s) are likely to be doing the job and have a look at their portfolio(s). There’s nothing more unsettling than getting a photographer other than the one you reviewed. So, ensure that you get the company to guarantee a photographer and backup photographer if necessary. When reviewing the photographer(s)’ portfolio ensure that you like their style of photography (formal, casual, candid etc.).

Do not neglect the personality. A professional, yet friendly and easy going nature, is very important for a photographer so that they make people feel at ease and natural when taking their pictures. You don’t want someone that is impatient and rushing you through your pictures or quick tempered making you feel awkward. Other important things to know are how creative and flexible they are and whether they are punctual for their appointments and efficient in their session. You can assess these traits in numerous ways: examining their portfolio will give you a sense of their creativity (are all pictures taken with the same pose?); listening to what they say about their style and what they enjoy most will reveal their preferences, finding out about their most challenging assignment and how they handled it will allude to their flexibility. You can find out about their punctuality, efficiency and overall impression by contacting references if possible.
