A recent death in a Chicago nursing home points to a much bigger problem nation-wide. It seems it is common practice in many nursing homes for pateints with dementia to be sedated only hours after admission to the nursing home. 74 year old Jorge Quinones was approached by a nursing home employee hiding a needle behind her back a few hours after he moved in. He was injected with a heavy sedative, according to a medical translation service that spoke with Quinones' family members. The state nursing home inspection officials were called in and determined that the woman with the needle was not licensed to dispense drugs, and that there was no doctor's order to administer the injection. Even worse, Quinones fell as a result of being dizzy from the injection. He was rushed to the hospital where he later died of head trauma from the fall.
