All metadata of files, directories and metafiles of an NTFS volume are stored in Master File Table (MFT). If MFT becomes corrupted due to media malfunction, virus infection or unexpected shutdown, all the data may render inaccessible. Since its only backup, which is MFT mirror, doesn't contain all the MFT entries, it may not be used to restore all important data. The prime solution for fixing MFT corruption is to run chkdsk.
