Tourists to the Galapagos Islands are killing off the unique animal species on the Ecuadorian island. According to a joint Spanish translation project, tourists bring a variety of diseases which threaten the wildlife indigenous to the island. In addition, cruise ships and airplanes bringing tourists to the island are transporting non-indigenous mosquitoes and other disease-carrying vermin. These imported disease carriers are bringing West Nile virus and various strains of malaria which are killing the animals on Galapagos. Scientists believe that it is only a matter of time before the species unique to the island are facing extinction. In an effort to try to control the spread of disease, the Ecuadorian government has mandated that all planes landing on the island be sprayed with pesticide.
