Asia’s most strongest and frequent team at FIFA is ready again to pitch
their efforts at vying the
FIFA
World Cup 2010. Winning a crucial final round of qualifiers,
they beat UAE 2-0 to clinch their entry ticket. However the qualifiers
were a rather treacherous thanks to their arch rivals: North Korea. The
“Taeguks” however cracked through and ensured their 7th consecutive
appearance at the world cup. Once famous midfielder and now coach, Huh Jung-Moo made all cynics &
critics silent by guiding his team with victories over UAE and Saudi
Arabia. Though his coach had a morose start however it quickly showed
its true colors. The coach is confident of the new talent entering the team and will keep
a heady mix of old and new when he presents the final list in June. The
coach has taken no time to declare a serious of friendly
football matches which will be
played in Europe around March before they head for South Africa. It is
rumored that the coach has already picked his players after a winter
camp held back home. I like the simple yet strong mindset of this man who knows they’ve never
gone past group stage except the brilliant final four entry in
Korea/Japan 2002. They had beaten strong teams like Portugal, Spain and
the mighty Italy. Currently, Korea Republic has the lowest rank out of the rest 3 group B
teams all of which are amongst the top 20. The most interesting news is the probable return of the famous Ahn
Jung-Hwan most remember for the goal that helped them defeat the mighty
Italians in
FIFA 2002 and the winning goal against Togo in FIFA 2006. Both the coach and
the player have shown keen interest and could prove to play a pivotal
role thanks to his rich experience in European football. However with
the final list yet to be drawn, we can only wait to see if he makes it
or not. Captain Park Ji-Sung who has shown his talent in the last 2 world cups
is all set to head the team this year as well. The Manchester United
winger is most known for being the perfect player to make passes at the
right moment. Despite below par performance in FIFA 2006, Park Chu-Yong
is another player to watch out for. Friendly matches have already been staged in Spain against Finland and
Latvia both of which were played well by the Taeguks. Thankfully, here
is one team which seems to be playing some serious teams than others
fixing matches with teams who couldn’t even qualify for this
FIFA World Cup 2010.
