In a Monday afternoon news conference, city officials said at least 116 were killed and hundreds were injured after a massive and historic tornado moved through the south side of Joplin, Missouri on Sunday.

In what has already been a violent and deadly year for tornadoes in the United States, a tornado reportedly sweeps through a small Kansas 250 person town killing one person and damaging and destroying dozens of homes Saturday evening.

April 2011 will go down in Mississippi history as the most tornado active month of April on record, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

More than half of Mississippi is now under some sort of disaster declaration from severe storms, flooding and tornadoes that have ravaged the state since April.

The National Weather Service in an updated river forecast Wednesday morning lowered the historic crests expected on the Mississippi River at Vicksburg and Natchez over the next few days.

Authorities shutdown the Mississippi River at the port in Natchez due to the record high flood waters, which could be made worse with barge traffic.
